The Invitation: investigating collaboration and co-creation in hybrid filmmaking practices
A workshop with filmmaker Alexander Carson
Description:
Collaboration is at the heart of some of the most thought-provoking artworks across disciplines. But what does it mean to collaborate, and what stakes are involved for different parties?
Canadian filmmaker and media artist Alexander (Sandy) Carson will lead a conversation and workshop around approaches to collaborative hybrid filmmaking practices. By reflecting on his own explorative processes leading two recent projects: Alberta Number One (2024—a feature-length film), and Escape Fantasy (2024—an intermedia work), Carson will invite participants into an investigation of the politics and power dynamics involved in collaboration and co-creation.
Participants will be supported to engage in the imaginative process of designing an invitation to collaborate on a future creative project of their choosing. This conversation and workshop will examine ethical considerations related to collaborative research-creation practices with the goal of supporting critical self-awareness around positionality and accountability in creative leadership.
Bio:
Alexander (Sandy) Carson is a Canadian filmmaker whose work explores the intersection of collective practices and personal storytelling. Carson’s films have been screened at events such as the Toronto International Film Festival, the Reykjavik International Film Festival, and the San Francisco International Film Festival, where he received the Golden Gate Award for New Visions in 2014. Carson is a graduate of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University (BFA, MA) in Montreal, and a founding member of the North Country Cinema media arts collective in Calgary.
