ANTH 408 [2022]

Tortured Instrument by Anissa Boyer

Tortured Instrument explores the dancing body as an instrument to depict lived experiences and torture. Dance is at the root of emotive and sensorial language and corporeal movements captivate the emotions and lived experiences of the performer. This short film illustrates the dancer as an instrument that can at times be more powerful than speech–the body. Through this corporeal exploration, the film shows how emotions and the affective experiences of the dancer transcend. Tortured Instrument seeks to captivate the spectator, creating a synergistic vacuum that unifies the affective experiences of the dancer and spectator alike. Gestures, physical embodiment, attunement to the space, and facial expressions create sensorial cues that narrate the human rights violations experienced by the dancer. As a corporeal tool to stimulate the senses, the performed movements by the dancer emotionally connect the viewer to the dancer creating a multisensory performance-audience engagement.
