ANTH 555 [2023]

The Critical Media Lab supports students in ANTH 408 and ANTH 555 with practical workshops in video, film and sound, as well as screenings and artists talks, all of which are essential resources for students to produce their own films and soundscapes.

Sound and Affect: Theme and Variations to a Panic Attack by Natasha Glisic

What does a panic attack sound like? How does one explain the personal experience of losing control of your body while the rest of the world continues to move around you? This piece is an experiment to see whether sound can express a moment that is otherwise difficult to reiterate into words. The intention is that, by recording layers of sounds that are heard as an anxious music student, it would portray the affective space that produces a panic attack. In doing so, this soundscape invites the listener to experience an affective response as a way of understanding what otherwise cannot be felt through mere explanation.
