ANTH 555 [2023]

The Critical Media Lab supports students in ANTH 408 and ANTH 555 with practical workshops in video, film and sound, as well as screenings and artists talks, all of which are essential resources for students to produce their own films and soundscapes.

Sonic Wandering by Dimitra Kolios

It is not the object of the story to convey a happening per se, which is the purpose of information; rather, it embeds it in the life of the storyteller in order to pass it on as experience to those listening" (Walter Benjamin "Some Motifs in Baudelaire" in Illuminations, p. 159). I hope my sound piece conveys and tells the story of the flaneur, the figure whose home is made from the walls of the city and the experience of wandering, capturing the tune of the world in footsteps, the whistles of the birds, the swishing of cars, the sound of steaming milk for of a latte in a café, the resonance of church bells and the jingling of keys opening doors. This sound composition is an attempt to sonically poeticize the outside world and the everyday sounds beyond the retinal frame and the rational ear.
