ANTH 408 [2022]

The Critical Media Lab supports students in ANTH 408 and ANTH 555 with practical workshops in video, film and sound, as well as screenings and artists talks, all of which are essential resources for students to produce their own films and soundscapes.

Horticultural Time by Katrina Burch

Crafted from 901 35mm photographs using double exposure techniques, Horticultural Time is an intimate portrait of a mother, Magdalena Olszanowski (Magda), with her infant, set against the politics of emotional life during the Covid-19 pandemic in Montréal. While resisting the extractive temporalities of industrialized interventions in motherhood and parenting, Magda embraces the ecological rhythms of growth, presence, touch, and play. For Magda, creating worlds in the 'ongoingness' of life with children (Manguso, 2015) becomes not only a gift but also a potential source for societal transformation: Within the realm of childcare, a subtle transcendent song emerges, replacing linguistic determinism with a co-creative process shared by all sentient beings in their quest for self-definition. This song-work opens the horizons of intelligibility while amplifying the potentials for tender companionship. Through affective modes of listening, the emergent forces of eros transform personal narratives, making us more attuned to an omnipresent music that infuses life everywhere.
